Audio Player/Jukebox for your website
« on: July 04, 2021, 02:37:48 PM »
This a nice, free for personal use and very customizable audio player, and probably the easiest I found to set up from the internet. It cames as an evolution of the well known, but old, Wimpy MP3 https://www.wimpyplayer.net/, a flash-based jukebox. Flash is dead since the beginning of this year.

Description of the player according to the author site:

Wimpy Player
A javascript HTML5 audio player & video player that's easy to set up, design, configure and customize.

Works on all devices
Custom Skins
Fluid + Responsive
Extensive Javascript API
No Dependencies (doesn't require jQuery or similar)
Built on pure Javascript, CSS & HTML5
Playlists supported: JSON, XML, RSS, Text & more
Works with any CMS template or platform

https://www.wimpyplayer.com/index.html

There's plenty of tutorials and you can even make your own skin.
If anyone has trouble trying to incorporate this software on a website, I can give a little helping hand.  :)

I forgot to mention a couple of limitations before installing it.

First you need to think about the amount of bandwith a webapp like this causes to use, particularly if you decide to host the music files locally. Not a good idea for a free plan, definitely you need to upgrade for this. Or make the playlist external.

Other drawback could be if the app is open to everyone and not just for registered members of the community (like I do, and recommend). Then you are doing 2 questionable actions: public broadcasting without copyright licence & abusing the personal license given by the software maker for personal use - There is a commercial license available if you want to make money from ads and so on.

Once assumed that, I managed to make my own skin, thinking it quite fits the "gaming military" classic theme style I have. :P

Well... it's a nostalgic website for nostalgic fun classic games, modern gaming is quite different and people use the latest & more complicated frameworks to build  communities. I am aware of where I stand.

But the point of not making yourself too dependant on powerful players like YouTube, Twitch, TikTok has a lot of sense for small webmasters. They can and already are, charging abusive fees for using their fancy APIs.

The internet has always been a place of interdependency, alas, what's the future when a few giants force you to be too dependant on them?
